18 September 2008
Institute for Materials, Minerals and Mining, London

This Open Space Discussion was designed to build constructive partnerships with other organisations and individuals with an interest in adult informal learning and the role technology has to play in supporting this learning activity. We define adult informal learning as unstructured learning that is owned and directed by the learner.

An Open Space Discussion provides opportunities for participants to host their own conversations, as well as take part in discussions raised by others.

Conversations captured during the event will inform a larger research project that Futurelab is undertaking on adult informal learning. The key aims of the project are:

  • to map current use of technology in adult informal learning
  • to gather user insights into need and aspirations for future technology use
  • to inform industry and policy of the resources and tools required to support adult informal learning.

A report from this event is available to download, summarising key points discussed.

Our research on adult informal learning

We're carrying out research into adult learners' needs and aspirations, what drives them to learn new things in their leisure time, and the role of digital technologies in supporting these activities.
