Creating learning spaces to meet the needs of tomorrow

This page explains what we aim to achieve by focusing on the theme of 'learning spaces', and points to key content on the site which is relevant to this theme.

The text below is an overview of why we are interested in learning spaces, exploring how different spaces can support different kinds of learning, and ways in which technology can be used to enhance learning spaces.

Vision

Futurelab’s learning spaces programme will:

  • equip education leaders with the tools required to envisage and create transformed educational learning spaces
  • model and research radically new technology enhanced learning spaces.

We will achieve this through:

  • building partnerships with schools, colleges, local authorities, architects and policy makers to develop new models of consultation, educational visioning and ideas development in preparation for capital investment programmes
  • building partnerships with industry and research communities to create experimental learning spaces that allow educators and technologists to model future educational experiences through cutting edge technology and pedagogy.

Outputs from the programme will include:

  • tools for educators and policy makers
  • exemplars of future learning spaces
  • evidence to inform and inspire industry, educators and the wider community.

Learning spaces consultancy

Futurelab is carrying out workshops and consultancy with schools and local authorities to support innovative thinking around school redesign. These activities are aimed at the pre-engagement or visioning phase of redesign programmes such as Building Schools for the Future and the Primary Capital Programme.

Through working with staff, pupils and other key stakeholders, the aim is to challenge schools and authorities to think differently in creating a compelling vision of a transformed educational future and to explore the possibilities of space, curriculum and school redesign in order to develop approaches to education appropriate for the 21st century.

For further information about these workshops or to express an interest in working with Futurelab, please contact tim [dot] rudd [at] futurelab [dot] org [dot] uk.
